Murray painting rated 16 by the FPB
In yet another articulation of the drama surrounding “The Spear”, the Film and Publications Board has rated the painting as not being suitable for persons under the age of 16 years of age. The FPB was quoted by News24 as saying:
“The FPB therefore presents to you that a classification rating of ’16N’ has been decided upon by the classification committee for the artwork by Brett Murray titled The Spear.”
It will be interesting to see any papers on their ruling to examine how they dealt with the questions in relation to their authority to rule on media content, as raised by Adv. Budlender. Discussing the bounds of jurisdiction and oversight of statutory bodies is worth noting, given calls for an additional statutory body to be formed under the Protection of Personal Information Bill for oversight on information issues.
Interesting too will be any examinations into the FPB’s jurisdiction over online content, and considerations more broadly over internet regulation; a discussion of increasing significance in the globalised world.
